5th Anniversary on Maui

WHERE: MAKENA, HAWAII | WHO: AMBER & MIKE | WHY: ANNIVERSARY PHOTOS FOR LOVE!

Where do I even begin with how sweet and fun these two were?!

With visions of warm colors, breathtaking scenery and tons of love for one another, Amber & Mike arrived at our session location and were so excited to start shooting! What time was it? SUNSET. Yup! If you want these dramatic colors and skies…that’s what you’ve gotta opt for! And believe me, it’s worth it every time…

After 5 years and two children, these two wanted to celebrate each other and their accomplishments on Maui, they’re most favorite vacation spot ever! Can you blame them?

Cheers to these two for loving hard, laughing even harder, and making me laugh the hardest ;-)

Planning Your Wardrobe: Maui Maternity Photography Session

Figuring out what to wear for any photography session is difficult...that's why I'm here to help you slim down your options, OR create some more fabulous ones!

The most important rule is to BE COMFORTABLE! But more importantly, be you! I am going to create art that will hang on your walls for years and I want you & your loved ones to look like themselves.

Keep it fun! If you want to bring two outfits, bring two. But no matter what you wear, be confident that I’ll make you look fantastic…It’s my job.

BASIC TIPS

  • I love color and accessories, just keep the patterns to a minimum ;-) Solid colors always photograph well. There's no risk of distracting from faces, interactions or the environment around you.

  • Ladies - long maxi dresses are your best bet for EVERYTHING. They’re literally flattering on everyone! Plus they move so beautifully!

  • Flower Crowns, however, are always encouraged! I just can't get enough of them!

  • Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes or backup shirt/bottoms - sand, dirt & shoreline fun are inevitable!

  • In general, shoes aren't necessary for any of my sessions. You can bring standard rubber sandals for walking to/from our location or for walking on any rocks/stones.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Photograph the outfits in advance. Lay out the clothing choices you have in mind and t are a quick snapshot with your phone. If you like what you see, this photo can be super helpful when shopping!

  • Makeup: Less is more - especially during outdoor portraiture. Weather here in Hawaii his HOT & HUMID, so avoid wearing any makeup that is shiny or has metallic minerals because it will catch in the sunlight. And I stress...WATERPROOF MASCARA.

  • Hair: My best advice? Wear your hair the way you want it to look in the wind (just in case it’s windy). I’m obsessed with movement & hair blowing in the wind, but it can be unflattering when it flies across your face and it begins to frustrate you. Hairspray helps, but I highly recommend bobby pins, clips & hair ties!

  • Bra: Support is key! If you're wearing a strapless dress, I encourage either no bra (don't worry, I'll edit the obvious...) or a supportive strapless bra that won't show. I want the focus to remain on your new curves, not wrinkles or bumps because of tucked or exposed straps!

THE BOLD + THE BEAUTIFUL

SELF LOVE

WHERE: MAKENA, HI | WHO: COCO | WHY: FOR SELF LOVE

The lovely Coco doesn’t need much of an intro…but if you must know, she’s as smart, intelligent and driven as she is beautiful (and did I mention hella FUN?!).

We kicked off our session bright and early and she was chipper as could be and full of so much energy & confidence - it’s no wonder her beach photo session blew her own mind! And mine, of course. What made her own this session, you ask? Her willingness to step outside of her comfort zone. THAT’S IT! Simple right? Hey, it’s 2019…take a chance ;-)

Solo sessions can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not one for having your photo taken on a regular basis or even at all! Feelings of vulnerability & insecurity like “OMG do I look like a fool? Did that person see me do that? Please direct me…please, I’m awful”; mixed with feelings of “I’m fierce and I WANT to rock this because I LOVE MYSELF - I don’t care what anyone thinks - no even my photographer!”….are totally fine and natural…and completely welcomed! I’m here to help you see a beauty in you that you never knew you had (or you knew you had, but needed a little reassurance)…

I’ve heard it all, I’ve seen it all, and nothing phases me…especially because I think everyone is beautiful, inside + out. Plain. Simple. Boooooom.

Mahalo Coco, for being so magically you and embracing all that makes you so wonderful! New England is lucky to have ya!

I DO (A MILLION TIMES)

WHO: MATTHEW + DENISE  |  WHY: INTIMATE WEDDING  |  WHERE:  MAKENA, HAWAII

When one of my good friends contacted me on Facebook and asked if I was open to shooting their nephew's Maui beach wedding, I couldn't turn it down - and after meeting Matthew & Denise, I"m SO glad I didn't!

It's not often that I shoot weddings - but when I do, I love them small, meaningful, and oh-so-beautiful - just like Matthew & Denise's beach nuptials. But their wedding wasn't always planned this way...at the very last minute, they decided to scrap their 300+ guest wedding plans back home and instead, elope among close family & friends here on Maui. Where? They didn't know, but that's where their amazing network of family in Maui came into play...myself included!

After much discussion on timing, locations, concerns, etc., within a week of the wedding, it all came together seamlessly; and on their big (but small) day, it was everything they had hoped for and so much more <3

Mahalo Matthew + Denise, for trusting me & allowing me to be a part of your amazing day. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

From Korea with Love

WHO: VIOLET & JASON  |  WHERE: MAUI, HI  |  WHY: HONEYMOON SESSION

Married only days prior, Violet & Jason contacted me to capture their wedding portraits in a "not so typical way"...basically, off the beaten path and not so bright and "paradise-like" like all the other photographers she was coming across in her searches. It just wasn't her style...

Welp, luckily she found me because our visions and ideas worked hand in hand and we captured some of the most gorgeous photos ever...incorporating both her love of dance and her love of Jason, now her husband.

After dodging a few crazy cows, cow "bombs" and dancing in the wind at sunset, we captured this modern couple's love and so so much more. Their simplicity. Because let's be honest, why complicate things?

Congratulations to you, Violet & Jason - you two are beautifully beautiful <3

A Sorta Fairytail...

WHO: BO & COURTNEY  |  WHERE: MAUI, HI  |  WHY: FOR (MERMAID) LOVE

Ever since Courtney was a child, she's been absolutely crazy about mermaids - so much so, that she now works part-time as a mermaid back home in California, making children, and I'm sure adults, smile from ear to ear with her beautiful personality and of course, mermaid tail.

Now of course, this is just something she absolutely loves doing and it's only been a huge part of her childhood and now, adulthood, so what more appropriate than for her boyfriend Bo to surprise her with her own mermaid photoshoot! Did I mention it was her birthday too?

Bo made an appearance in a few of these, but he wanted the focus to be on her...and it seriously was. She was an absolute natural in the water with her tail - I couldn't even keep up with her! #theydoexist

Now get your inner mermaid on and check out some of my faves from their session...<3

LADY IN RED

I finally have a moment to breathe after returning from my amazing trips to New Mexico and Las Vegas for the WPPI Conference a few weeks ago...and honestly, it feels good, but I'm feeling even greater after all that I've accomplished these past few weeks!

Las Vegas, as usual, was an amazing time! We went to see my family at Blue Man Group and ate some of the best burgers (and milkshakes) I've ever had at Holsteins Shakes & Buns, and so much more. But what was really amazing, besides the 3 days I was immersed in the WPPI Conference of course, was my short time with this stunning Lady in Red...

She was motivated & awake enough to pick me up at 5:30 am and drive us over to Red Rock Canyon to catch the sunrising in all it's beauty, while of course, capturing her in all of her beauty.

It was chilly. It was windy. Did I mention it was chilly? And she was far from dressed for the weather...but wow, did she brave the elements and make it look easy! I cannot thank her enough for her time, her story telling, her beauty, and of course, her positive "can do" attitude.

I promise...my car sickness had nothing to do with you ;-)

SOC SWIMWEAR

Working with SOC is always an absolute treat - but this time, it was the cutest treat ever!

SOC Maui's latest & greatest swimwear line for the little ones in your life...and their other little friends ;-) Introducing, their KEIKI line...swimwear sure to make all the kids smile and giggle and look cute at the same time <3

STRONGER THAN YESTERDAY

Meet Morgan.

She's got stories...attitude...motivation...heart...and muscles galore. But what she's got the most of is strength. Infinite strength to be honest. So she's making moves...BIG moves...because she's got so much creativity and drive within her, that it can't be contained. And I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

LA, watch out. Fitness world, watch out.

Morgan in her element...

A MERMAID STORY

On a calm, sunny Sunday, we decided to make it a "Fun Day" by venturing over to Maui's Upper West Side in search of clear water, some diving, plenty of sun-bathing, and good eats. And to kick it all off, some fresh squeezed watermelon + pineapple juice ;-)

Naturally, I brought along my cameras to capture all the goodness the day had to offer, but what I ended up capturing was my amazing friend Sabine, emerging as the most beautiful mermaid ever.

Now...I've shot her diving before and her photos were nothing short of magical...but the photos I got of her this day were some of the best to-date...and I have mother-nature to thank for it. And her ability to hold her breath for a lengthy amount of time was SUPER helpful! (Also a BIG Mahalo to Freedive HI for your guidance in making her the perfect deep water subject!)

Thanks Sabine, for always being my mermaid-muse and a wonderful human being. Can't wait for our next adventure <3

FAMILY TIME

WHERE: MAKENA, HAWAII  |  WHO:  OLSON OHANA  |  WHY: JUST BECAUSE...

Hawaiian vacations make the Olson family happy - so happy that they have been coming back to Hawaii for years and years with so many more trips to come!

It's not often this family of four is able to get away with just each other...so this was their chance to relish in each other's company with little on their agenda. Except this photo shoot and dinner afterwards ;-)

They call their lives "typical", but my time with them was far from it...and they're one of the most laid-back, low maintenance, loving families I've had the opportunity to shoot - and I"m soooo thankful they strolled into my lens!

Mahalo to you all <3
