Tips For Traveling to Maui With Babies & Toddlers
Tips For Traveling to Maui With Babies & Toddlers
As a seasoned traveler and Maui family photographer, I understand the unique challenges and joys that come with exploring Maui with Babies and toddlers. From capturing unforgettable family moments, to navigating the Island’s stunning (and sometimes challenging landscapes and climates), let me help guide you through some of the most helpful tips to make things a bit more easier on you…because parents, we all know how it is 🥴
Plan ahead for Maui Family Photos
Before you even set foot on the Island, consider scheduling a family photoshoot with one of Maui’s best family photographers, like myself! It’s always a fun adventure, and something you’ll regret NOT doing looking back on your time here. Plus, all photographers here on Maui are invaluable resources on well…just about everything! Ask us where to eat, stay, things to do and we’ll gladly recommend activities or retreats appropriate for your family.
Choose Family-Friendy Accommodations
Finding the right accommodations is KEY to an stress-free vacation. Dare I say…POOL, POOL, POOL. Look for family-friendly resorts or vacation rentals that offer amenities like kids pools, water slides, cribs, refrigerators, microwaves, high chairs and child proofing services. Many resorts in Maui also have Kids Clubs and activities to keep your little ones entertained while you relax and unwind with a nice Mai Tai or Lavaflow 🍹 Some of my personal favorites are: The Grand Wailea, The Marriott Ocean Club in Wailea, Honua Kai, The Westin Nanea, and The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa.
Pack Wisely for Family Excursions & Adventures
Maui’s diverse landscapes and plethora of micro-climates offer endless opportunities for family fun. Be sure to pack essentials like sunscreen, hats, swimsuits, warm clothing, towels, a change of clothing, and plenty of snacks and water for your little adventurers (and you!). I highly recommend just keeping these things in your car at all times so you’re always prepared. Don’t forget to bring a sturdy baby carrier or stroller for exploring uneven terrain, and consider renting any bulky baby gear to lighten your load. I highly recommend Maui Vacation Equipment for all your rental needs!
Embrace Nature & the Hawaiian Culture
Hawaii is special in so many ways. From the views, to the food, and especially, the culture. Embrace local culture and immerse yourself in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Hop in your car and drive the Road to Hana and stop as much as you can….take it all in. Consider not wearing shoes too often either…feel the energy of the land as you slow down and unwind.
Be Flexible and Take it Slow
Above all, remember to take it slow and enjoy every moment with your little ones in Maui. There’s a time change for everyone, so allow the patience as every adjusts, especially for nap times. Embrace the laid-back island lifestyle and don’t be afraid to adjust your plans based on your children’s needs and preferences. Whether you're spending a day building sandcastles on the beach or hiking through the lush valley of Iao State Park, cherish these precious moments together as a family.

How to Prepare for a Maui Family Photo Session With Kids
How to Prepare for a Maui Family Photo Session
You’ve officially booked your family trip to Maui, Hawaii and now, you’ve found your perfect photographer to capture your family at their absolute best, and in paradise - congratulations! Now let the fun (and preparation) begin for your Maui family pictures…
Preparing for a family photo session in Maui with kids is crucial to the success of your session. I specifically capture small families with children 10 years old and younger, making me one of Maui’s most trusted early years family photographers. Kids within this age range are always fun, open minded, don’t overthink things, and are beautifully true to themselves…but Mom & Dad are keys to their session success. So let’s dive in, shall we?
Tips for preparing for a successful Maui family photo session with your kiddos:
Plan ahead. Discuss a location, time of day, and outfit coordination with your family (and photographer) well in advance. This will help everyone be prepared and minimize stress on the day of the shoot.
Choose comfortable, coordinating outfits that are true to who each of you are. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that. complement each other. Avoid busy prints or neon colors and clothing with logos that can be distracting.
Pack snacks and small toys. While the beach and ocean are typically distracting enough, bringing along their favorite besties and familiar treats & distractions can help keep little ones happy and engaged throughout our session.
Schedule around Nap Times if possible. The time change here in Maui can be brutal for some, but that’s why there are either Sunrise or Sunset options for sessions. While there’s typically a time change for all visitors here, work around the timeframe that works best for your kids and when they will feel well-rested and fed. I’ve found that the ocean has a magical way of waking kids up and bringing them to life even if it’s way past their normal bedtime routine. Trust the flow, and most importantly, trust your photographer.
Involve the kids! Let them help choose poses or fun activities they want to do during the shoot. I like to focus on the kids from the get-go and get a gauge of who they are and what they like to do for fun. Plus, their personalities tend to come out pretty quickly during my sessions, so I’ll be sure to engage them in every way possible, and hope you will, too! We want them to feel more invested and willing to cooperate and just have fun. That’s what makes beautiful images, right?
Bring a helper. Having an extra adult or relative to assist with keeping the kids focused and entertained can sometimes be very useful. Having them carry some of the toys, snacks and bags is always extra helpful if they’re willing ;-)
Be patient and flexible. Kids don’t always cooperate as planned. It’s important to go with the flow and be prepared to adapt your expectations as needed. We want to capture who your family truly is…relax!
The key is balancing preparation with flexibility to create an enjoyable, stress-free experience for both the kids and the photographer. With a little planning, you CAN capture beautiful family memories here in Maui - I promise!
preparing Your kids mentally & emotionally for a Maui family photo shoto is also really important. here are some tips:
Explain the plan. Talk to your kids about when the photo session will be, where it will take place, and what they can expect. This helps manage their expectations. (Don’t worry, I send along a “What to Expect Guide” when you first book with me to help give you an idea…)
Emphasize the FUN! Frame the photo shoot as a fun, special activity that you’ll all do together. It’s truly another adventure! Focus on the positives like getting dressed up, playing with the photographer, and even playing in the water at the end of the session. That alllllways gets them excited ;-)
Encourage silly poses (and I’ll always do the same!). Kids often feel self-conscious posing formally, so I’ll do my part to encourage tickles, making funny faces, and fun, playful poses to keep them engaged and loosen up. It’s my job (and it’s the BEST watching them loosen up and be themselves!)
Manage their fears/concerns. If they express worries about smiling, sitting still, or anything else, validate their feelings and provide reassurance. Let them know it’s okay to feel that way and we’ll be sure to give them enough space to warm up to the session. Be sure to communicate these fears/concerns to your photographer as well so they can help!
Involve them in the process. Allow them to pick out outfits, choose props, or suggest ideas for poses. This gives them a sense of ownership. I also ask for their help directing Mom and Dad during the session, so they feel a sense of confidence.
Offer incentives. I’ll bring some special treats along, but parents, you know what they like best, so promise them a special treat or activity after the session as a reward for their cooperation. This gives them something to look forward to.
Stay positive yourself. If you approach it with confidence and enthusiasm, they’re most likely to feed off your energy and do the same. Mom and Dad, if you can match their energy, even better! Engage them with jokes, games or simply be animated and upbeat!
The MOST important thing is to make your Maui family photo experience feel less like a formal photo session and more like playtime…with nice clothing on 😆 With patience and an open mind, let’s help you and your family shine in your photos.
Note: And don’t worry, random breaks are always included in our sessions so kids (and parents) don’t ever feel overwhelmed or frustrated. I encourage them actually! Everyone needs time to recharge sometimes. 🙌🏼

When to Schedule a Maternity Photo Session in Maui
The timing of your Maui maternity photo shoot (on land or in the water) is critical - especially during your baby moon in Hawaii…
The timing of your Maui maternity photo shoot (on land or in the water) is critical - especially during your babymoon in Hawaii…
Schedule it too early, your baby bump will not be as visible and won’t take as prominent of a role in the photos. Alternatively, if you schedule your maternity shoot after the 34 week mark, you might be dealing with swelling, aches and pains, and generally feel like a photo shoot is too much work!
EVERY WOMAN IS DIFFERENT…SO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, SEE HOW IT’S CHANGING, AND MAKE THE BEST DECISION FOR YOU.
Some women are showing earlier in their pregnancy, so booking a shoot near the 6 month mark may work great! Plus you’ll be more mobile, adventurous, show less fatigue, and generally, happier and more comfortable. And trust me, you’ll want to be mobile during your time here in the islands ;-)
In general though, the best time to schedule a maternity session during your baby moon is typically anywhere between 26-34 weeks, or at the 7 to almost 8 month mark, when your bump is big enough to be seen, and you’re still in your comfortable zone.
At this point in your pregnancy, your baby will not have started to move downward - that means you’ll have a higher tummy that looks much better in a portrait than after the baby has started to move its way lower in your body. In the third trimester, your belly will be just the right size - big and beautiful, but not so big that it’s difficult for you to move around, change positions, swim, and pose for the camera.
DREAMING OF AN UNDERWATER MATERNITY SESSION IN MAUI, HAWAII?
THE EARLIER IN YOUR PREGNANCY, THE BETTER!
Think about it - you, the ocean, a dress/bikini, your growing bump, and Mother Nature - it’s a lot to manage! What we really want to avoid is you performing a water birth during our session (I’m SO serious) - so be sure to time our session when you’re not too far along and your tummy is still in it’s “floatation device” stage (usually no more than 7.5 months max).
If your tummy is too heavy, it’ll feel like a weight in the water, and that’s no fun for anyone ;-) I’ll be with you every step of the way, so rest assure that I’ll do the managing - you just show up feeling & looking your best (and lightest!) .
Salt water is super buoyant, but there are currents, sometimes waves, and you may need to tread water if you really want some of the deep, underwater shots (like the ones above + below). Fabrics like chiffon and tulle do really well in the water and look amazing when you can get them to float just right - so plan accordingly to make your time in the water, as effortless as possible.
See some wardrobe tips from my blog on “Planning your Wardrobe for Your Maternity Session”.
My biggest advice? Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your photo shoot! Plan ahead with your photographer and get on their calendar well in advance - especially if you’re in the process of planning your Maui BabyMoon. Trust me…it’s worth it!
The Cutest Family Session at Ironwoods Beach
I love my clients - all of them. So choosing which Maui Family Photoshoot to showcase in a Blog on my site isn’t ever easy - but the second I met this family…well, their two twin lil girls…I just knew it was meant for more eyes than mine & Instagram!
Where: Ironwoods Beach, Kapalua | Why: For Maui Family Photos
I love my clients - all of them. So choosing which to showcase in a Blog on my site isn’t ever easy - but the second I met this family…well, their two twin little girls…I just knew it was meant for more eyes than mine & Instagram!
We laughed the kind of laughs where we couldn’t stop…the girls were on their absolute cutest behavior ever and I didn’t want them to wind down..and Mom & Dad? Flawless. I keep looking back at this session and say to myself “I’m not crying, you’re crying” because I can’t help but feel the silliness and love all over again - and I know they feel the same 💕
Maui Maternity Love + Laughter

When Ryan first contacted me about a Maui maternity session for her and her husband Dan, I could immediately tell they were a match made in laughter…
Maybe it was the way she answered her Questionnaire, or maybe it’s because I started following them both on Instagram and adored the way they entertained each other; whatever it was…I was SO right! (Go me!)
From the parking lot, to the beach, then to the ocean, they made it really hard for me keep my camera focused b/c they couldn’t resist being so cute with one another. And the conversations we had together were even more great! Can we say “flooooowing”?! If these two lived on Maui, I would totally adopt them as friends!
Top 3 things I love about these two:
1) Even after almost 10 years, they STILL flirt as if it’s Day 1
2) They’re practically fish in the water 🐟
3) Their amazing hair!
So Ryan + Dan, thank you for bring along your whits, your love, your bump, and your all around awesomeness. I can’t wait to see the three of you again!

What do you do when your partner lives in Shanghai and you live in LA? You make long distance work like magic, and then you make it official…in Maui ✈️

What do you do when your partner lives in Shanghai and you live in LA? You make long distance work like magic, and then you make it official…by hiring me and eloping in Maui ✈️
To say this was an adventure, would be a complete understatement. We began in the jungle, conquering spot after spot, and losing battle after battle with more mosquitoes than we could ever possibly count. And bug spray? Ha! Like it helped…
Nevertheless, we conquered! Did I say that already?
Our next location was the ever amazing Ironwoods Beach in Kapalua, where there were NO mosquitos, and plenty of gorgeous sunlight to expose this beautiful couple.
Were they troopers? Absolutely! Were her dress & veil out of this world? You bet! Will their love last forever and ever? If they can take on millions of mosquito bites without crying…I can guarantee it!
